Best of Summer Living

Summer! It’s the season of sandals and summer dresses, farmers’ markets, and dining al fresco under the stars. It’s a time to celebrate life with family and friends. It’s a time when I try to slow down, to enjoy and appreciate .

I recently attended the 50th birthday party of a dear friend and client up at their farm in Litchfield County. The house, a 1700’s farmhouse that we totally renovated,  sits amongst green, rolling pastures. We sipped cocktails as we strolled through the beautifully maintained organic vegetable gardens. The kale, lettuces, beans were bursting. Really, there is nothing as good as fresh picked fruits and vegetables, eaten outside on a hot summer evening!  Not only the flavor, but the simplicity and authenticity of the experience are real luxuries.

I feel the same way about the things in my, or my clients’, houses. When possible, whether modern, classic, or historic I choose authentic materials and quality craftsmanship. I honor history. At this amazing farmhouse, we used reclaimed barn wood for the floors and we sourced the local antique markets until we found just the right game table for the sunroom, and nightstands for the bedrooms. For the kitchen addition, we used custom-made floor-to-ceiling windows to match the existing originals. The stone fireplace surround came from stones collected on the property. The Rohl kitchen faucet, beautiful in shape and high quality design, was the perfect choice here. It’s timeless and fitted right into the scheme. At the clients request, we used only organic sustainable fabrics from O Ecotextiles. Specific design choices like these make a project unique and authentic. The end result, as you can see in the photos below, is a personal retreat that reflects the values and love of a very special family.

A beautiful room to hang out with family. No tv’s here but there are plenty of games to play. The armchair fabric is from O Ecotextiles.

Here’s a kitchen to welcome family and friends. The warmth of the reclaimed wood floors and the locally sourced fireplace surround add authenticity. Pendant lights from Holly Hunt. Faucet from Rohl.

The marble counters and backsplash create a perfect backdrop for the polished nickel Rohl faucet. Homemade tomato sauce in jars line the shelves.

Just off the kitchen, this porch provides a protected space for casual meals.

Local stone collected from the farm make a beautiful fireplace surround.

What’s a farm without a red tractor?
